Ellison at Oulton by Andrew-and-Seven Ellison at Oulton by Andrew-and-Seven
22/07/06 Oulton Park, Cheshire UK

Dean Ellison on board his Slingshot Racing Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade during a practice lap for the British Superbike Championship 2006.

Thanks as ever to Jay and Tasha at Londonbikers.com for the press arrangements for access to these events, a pass to get close enough for a mere 200mm lens, and the motivation to get my ass out there. Forever in your debt guys.

1/500sec f9.5 iso100 200mm on Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX

Minor contrast adjustment and burning of left corner to balance the frame. Edge sharpening applied to emphasis depth.

Hmm... Everyone here talks about the lens and the bike. Me being the anorak has to wonder where you've taken this. Is it onto the start/finish straight? I just can't think of anywhere else the barrier's that close to the black stuff.
I'll go run and hide now... :sprint:

AS they enter Knickerbrook/Clay Hill region of the circuit. They charge up the hill (Clay?) and then there's a straight and this left is at the end. They then plunge into the trees for the Water Tower section.

The light was really good on that bend for a while, and the 200mm lens was just long enough to catch a decent frame size. I know the bend you're thinking about, just after the huge dip, but it's difficult there as you can't really track them coming in - they just pop up out of the dip. Besides, it seemed to be in permanent shadow.

Everyone can talk about what they like mate, I'm just amazed at how popular it's become - it really wasn't one that I was in rush to sort out. Shows what I know eh?

Ah, okay. Now I get you. That would have been my second guess but I didn't realise the fence was so close there. As for the image, I'm kind of amazed too at how popular it is; I mean some of your previous images - in a purely arty sense - are just sublime. I wonder whether it's the colour scheme, because I see some have noted that here...

Notice that the bike has been recently crashed - there's a big graze on the side and the poorer teams (this one certainly) can't afford to just slap new panels on. It is a beautiful looking machine - my favourite in the races. His helmet design is fantastic too. I'll post more of him soon for sure.

Check back eh?

Admiring them, of course..
Now, I still love them but not really into them much..

Macro or non-macro Sigma lens? I had the old non-macro one - it's a gem.

It's the non-macro, last year's model. So I can't focus closer than 1.5 metres :O

yeah, but it's much sharper than the macro version. I had an abnormally good copy, and mine was roughly as sharp as my EF 70-200/2.8L USM that I have now (the Sigma was stolen last October with the rest of my gear, and the only model available was the macro version)

It's a shame, that lens is my primary portrait lens, and I always use it at 200mm for that purpose. 200mm on the Macro version however, is too soft to use. If you want to get some extra magnification out of it, go with the Canon version - it focuses down to just under 5 feet, versus the Sigma's 6 feet.

Interesting !

I love the lens, it is an absolute peach. I'm hoping to upgrade the body from my 10d to a Mark IIn (or dare I whisper a Mark III) soon, once funding permits. Then I'll give the lens a work out. :)

Look for a refurbished 1D Mark II. The changes between it and the N version are almost nonexistent - it has the same sensor and image processor, buffer, shutter mechanism et cetera. All they did was give it a larger screen and tweak the software a bit. That's what I did - I snagged a 1D Mark II for over a $1000 less than the N, practically new. Check B&H's used department - Canon doesn't let a retailer sell items as refurbished or demo, so it's all listed as "used." Usually Canon high end bodies on their site with a rating of "10" are actually not used.

And now with the 1D Mark III, you'll probably be able to get one of those for far less than a 5D costs new.

Good point, and I'll think about it indeed. Noticed on Ebay that Canon are selling them like that - I'll watch a few and see what price they go for.

I picked up my current one for 2599 USD. It had only a couple thousand actuations and was never even owned by and end user before it was refurbished - most likely a display model at B&H (where I bought it). And that was just a month ago, the price for a really, really good copy should be dropping soon. Mine might as well be straight from the factory, brand new. It's the only way to go.

Sounds good. I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on the prices of the MArk I and II now that the III has been launched/announced. I hope a few hacks will sell theirs to trade up or as you say I may benefit from a bit of 'end of line' discounting. :)

B&H ? I'm in the UK so don't recognise the name. Guess I'll check the US stores too given the great exchange rate (for us ;) ) at the mo.

Cheers for the advice bud, keep it coming too :)

Really nice mate, unusual angle too, which makes for an eye-ctaching detail on "a bike going past".

Love the bit on the front right fairing where his spoinsor is completely burnt off from a drop... :)

Wow - i find the colours and sharpness of this photo enticing. The angle is perfect and the distinction between the blur of the background and the clarity of bike/biker is amazing. This is by far the best bike shot you have up yet! :+fav:
